2012 – 2013 Athletic Advisor Board WCU Biographies

Sharon Began is a Professor in the Department of Biology within the College of Arts and Sciences at WCU. She received her BSEd. in Biology from Kutztown University, M.S. in Biology from East Tennessee State University and a Ph.D. in plant biology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Sharon was a Division II softball student-athlete at Kutztown and played ASA softball for 15 years. Her current athletic focus is tennis. Sharon is interested in supporting student-athletes in meshing athletic performance and academic pursuits as well as promoting WCU athletics on campus and in the community. Sharon is one of six faculty representatives on the board.

Matt Bricketto joined WCU in 1986 as Dean of Students and in 2001 became the Vice President for Student Affairs. He holds a BS (Business Administration) from Seton Hall University, an M.Ed. (College Student Personnel Work) from Ohio University, an MBA (Management) from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Ed.D. (Educational Administration) from Rutgers University. Matt has a passion for running, traveling, and golf as leisure time pursuits. Matt holds one of two ex officio positions on the board.

David Holt is the Athletics and Recreation Senator of the Student Government Association (SGA) He is a junior majoring in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Math and English within the Department of early and Middle Grades Education and plans to have a career in education. David is passionate about sports and is very involved in athletics both as a player and as a fan. David is one of three student representatives on the AAB.

Jerome (Skip) Hutson is the Director of Multicultural Affairs in the Division of Student Affairs at WCU. He has been at West Chester since 1992. Skip is a 1978 graduate of Salisbury State University in Maryland, and a product of the Student Personnel in Higher Education graduate program at The Ohio State University. At WCU Skip serves on many different university-wide committees including the Campus Climate Intervention Team, and is the faculty advisor to the Black Student Union. His work in the area of athletics includes the Sports Equity Committee, Athletic Task Force Review Committee and the Athletic Advisory board. Skip is one of three administration representatives on the board.

Leigh Gumlock Silfies is a junior majoring in Exercise Science within the Department of Kinesiology.  She is a member of both the WCU women’s cross country team and track team. Leigh also serves as the community chair of SAAC. Leigh is one of three student representatives on the AAB.

Tammy C. James is a Professor in the Department of Health within the College of Health Sciences at WCU. She received her B.S. (School Health), M.Ed. (Community Health) and Ph.D. (Curriculum & Instruction in School Health) all from Kent State University. Tammy has served as a consultant with the Center for the Study of Sport and Society at Northeastern University. She was instrumental in providing technical assistance to the development of the curriculum for the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) and the Project TEAMWORK Program. Tammy also created and teaches a Leadership/Lifeskills course for student athletes. This is Tammy’s second “tour of duty” with the Athletic Advisory Board; she last served for 4 years. Tammy is one of six faculty representatives on the board.

Meghan Kerrigan is a senior majoring in Pharmaceutical Product Development with a minor in Biology and Applied Ethics.  She is a captain of the Golden Rams Women’s Basketball team and led the PSAC with the highest assist to turnover ratio for the 2011-2012 season.  She was honored with the PSAC Champion Scholar Award and WCU’s Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for the 2011-2012 season, as well.  Meghan is one of three student representatives on the AAB.

Peter Loedel is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Political Sciences within the College of Business and Public Affairs at WCU. He was a double major as an undergraduate getting a B.A. in Political Science/International Studies and German Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also has both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Peter played soccer, tennis and water polo in high school and continued to play water polo while at Palomar Community College. He has extensive coaching experience in youth sports. Peter feels that WCU student-athletes are some of the best students he has in the classroom and wants to maintain the balance between academics and athletics. Peter is one of six faculty representatives on the board.

Henry Loustau is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at WCU. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College and a M.F.A. from the University of Illinois. Henry ran track and cross country as well as wrestled in both high school and college. Since graduation he has enjoyed cycling and tennis. Henry has a long time interest in the relationships between academics and athletics. Henry is one of six faculty representatives on the board.

Ed Matejkovic was named Director of Athletics at WCU in 1995. A 1969 graduate of WCU, Ed spent his previous 12 years at SUNY Brockport, a Division III school where he held the dual role of athletics director and head football coach. He has served president of the PSAC Executive Committee for four years and continues to serve the PSAC on numerous other committees. Ed is the current past-president of the Division 2 Athletic Director's Association, a chapter of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). ). He was recently appointed to the NACDA Executive Board for a three year term. He was named the Northeast Region Division II Athletic Director of the Year by NACDA in June 2009. He is also a member of the ECAC Board of Directors, the ECAC Finance Committee and the ECAC Membership Committee. He served as president of the ECAC during 2002-03. In addition, Ed served on the NCAA Student Athlete Reinstatement Committee, the NCAA Division II East Region men’s basketball championship selection committee and has served on the NCAA Football Task Force – a committee reviewing scholarship allocations in the sport. Since his arrival back on campus both facilities and the fortunes of WCU’s athletic programs have vastly improved. Ed was inducted into the Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame and was selected to the Temple University "Gallery of Success." He earned both his B.S. and M.Ed in Physical Education from WCU, and his Ed.D. (Sports Administration/Athletic Facility Management) from Temple University. Bruce Norris is the Director of the B.S. Liberal Studies: Professional Studies program within the College of Arts and Sciences at WCU. He earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from West Chester and a M.A. in Physical Education (exercise science concentration) from the University of Maryland. Bruce was a 4-year letter winner in indoor and outdoor track while at WCU. He was a certified athletic trainer for 25 years, coached high school indoor track as well as serving as a youth coach for baseball, basketball and soccer. He is also a soccer official. Bruce continues to be interested in the success of WCU athletes both in the classroom as well as in competition. In the past he served on the Athletic Department’s Gender Equity Advisory Committee. Bruce is one of six faculty representatives on the board.

Joe Santivasci joined WCU in 2003 as the University Registrar and in Fall 2011 became the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management and University Registrar. He earned a B.S. from Widener University and has a M.Ed. from the University of Delaware. Joe coaches Little League baseball and enjoys sports in general. He looks forward to clarifying academic policies as they relate to athletics and student-athletes and finding solutions to conflicts that may arise between athletics and academics. Joe is one of three administration representatives on the board.

Sean Sebeck is a senior majoring in Exercise Science within the Department of Kinesiology.  He is a member of both the WCU men’s cross country team and track team. Sean also serves as the President of SAAC. Sean is one of three student representatives on the AAB.

Craig Stevens is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Kinesiology within the College of Health Sciences at WCU. He earned his BA (Psychology) from the Johns Hopkins University, a M.S. (Physical Education: Exercise Science concentration) from Springfield College and a Ph.D. (Exercise Physiology, secondary concentration in Medical Physiology) from Temple University. He was a Post-doctoral Research Associate at the Institute for Environmental Medicine within the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Craig was a football, wrestling and lacrosse athlete in high school and continued playing football and wrestling in college. He is the recipient of several athletic awards. Craig stayed at Johns Hopkins after graduation serving as the Sports Information Director, assistant football coach, and both assistant and head wrestling coach. While at Springfield College he was an assistant high school football, wrestling and lacrosse coach. At Temple University he was the assistant Powerlifting coach for Temple’s club team. He has coached various youth sports (football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, wrestling) for over 15 years. He has served as a strength and conditioning consultant for a variety of athletic teams both at UPenn and WCU as well as several local high schools. Craig chairs the Athletic Advisory Board and serves as the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative for WCU. He is also serves on the Sports Equity Committee.

Claire Verden is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the Department Special Education within the College of Education at WCU. She earned a B.S. from West Chester University in Health and Physical Education, her M.Ed. from Temple University and her Ed.D. in Special Education from Arcadia University. Claire played soccer while at West Chester and has been a high school tennis coach and youth sports soccer coach. With a strong love for sports and many student-athletes in her classes Claire wants to support our University’s athletes as a member of the AAB. Claire is one of six faculty representatives on the board.

John Villella is the Associate Dean of the College of Visual and Performing arts at WCU. He earned his BS and MM Music Education Degrees from West Chester University and Ed.D. from Widener University. John joined the WCU faculty in 1983 and is probably best known as the director of the marching band from 1993 to 2007. He was an assistant coach for youth baseball and enjoys playing golf. He is an advocate of student success an important outcome in both the arts and athletics. John is one of three administration representatives on the board.
