Frequently Asked Questions

I'd like to schedule a visit to WCU and the School of Music. Is that possible?
Of course! We encourage all prospective students to visit Swope Music Building and WCU. Students can register online for a School of Music information session, building tour, and campus tour conducted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Do you offer a double major in music education and music performance?
We offer a 5-year program that allows students to complete the requirements for both degrees. To enroll, students must demonstrate performance level proficiency on their primary instrument and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Can I major in Jazz?
Yes! However, the Jazz Performance Degree is a very selective program that is only available in the instrumental areas of saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass (acoustic and electric), piano, and percussion. See the Undergrad Audition Requirements website for specific information.

I can play multiple instruments. Can I study all of these while at WCU?
While we understand that many of our students have the ability to play multiple instruments, we ask that students undertake academic study of one primary instrument. If their schedule allows, students can participate in additional ensembles if they would like to continue playing another instrument.

How do I sign up to audition for the School of Music?
All prospective music majors must first apply for admission to WCU and be academically accepted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to an audition. The School of Music cannot audition any students who have not been academically accepted. Once you have been accepted, you will receive an email invitation to register online for an Audition Day. Upcoming dates and audition requirements can be found on the Audition Day website.

What are the audition requirements?
See our Undergrad Audition Days website.

When will I know if I am accepted into the music program?
Because we only invite those to audition for the School of Music that are already cleared by the Office of Admissions, you will usually know if you are accepted to the School of Music within 1-2 days of your audition.

If I'm accepted as a Music major at WCU, can I minor in another field?
Yes. However, because all music major degree programs are quite demanding, counseling and subsequent approval from your academic advisor is required.

Tell me about Music Therapy at WCU. How does that work?
Students enrolled in the 4 ½ year collaborative music therapy program with Immaculata University complete their music degree and music therapy co-requisites at WCU while simultaneously completing their core music therapy coursework at Immaculata University. Upon completion of the program, students graduate from WCU with a Bachelor of Music degree and are eligible to obtain music therapy board certification. Check out this flyer for additional information.

What Scholarships are available specifically for music students?
Most of our music scholarships are for currently enrolled students based upon competitions, GPA, faculty recommendations, and additional criteria. We do have a few music scholarships available for incoming students based on audition results. Students awarded scholarships will be contacted at the conclusion of all auditions.
