A cooperative effort between West Chester University and West Chester Area School District providing music lessons to students 10 or over. If interested, contact the School of Music at 610-436-2678.

Summer Camps


Summer High School Music Camp
June 29 - July 3, 2008

Program Highlights: Available for voice, string, wind instruments, piano, and percussion

  • Each student will receive three private lessons with our faculty
  • Faculty demonstrations/recitals
  • Small Ensembles – string, flute, brass, double reeds, vocal, etc.
  • Large Ensembles – band, orchestra, choir, jazz ensemble
    Master Classes
  • Music Theory Classes
  • Elective Courses including jazz improvisation, preparing for a college audition, beginning piano and guitar , and music history
Cost  
Resident: $595.00
(early registration (before June 1) - $550.00)
  Includes dormitory housing, campus meals, and complete program
Commuter: $540.00
(early registration (before June 1) - $500.00)

Summer Elementary and Middle School Music Camps
June 23 - 27, 2008 (9am to 12pm)

Program Highlights:

  • Large-ensemble and small-ensemble performance opportunities including concert band, string orchestra, flute choir, clarinet ensemble, saxophone ensemble, brass ensemble and percussion ensemble.
  • Instruction from some of the region’s finest educators and performers.
  • Daily faculty mini-recitals which allow your students to see professional musicians in an intimate and engaging setting.
  • A showcase concert at the end of the week for friends and family featuring all ensembles

Cost: $210.00 per student (register by May 1, 2008 for only $195.00)

High School Composers Summer Workshop
July 7 - 11 , 2008

Workshop Overview

  • public concert & recording session of original student compositions by professional musicians
  • presentations by nationally-acclaimed professional composers

  • topics include compositional technique, score analysis, orchestration, musicianship

Summer Jazz Workshop
July 13 - 18 , 2008

Students will explore the pedagogy of jazz improvisation, arranging, orchestration, jazz history and performance techniques. Visiting artists as well as the WCU faculty will perform and conduct mastercalsses on various subjects. All participants will need to have a knowledge of scales, be able to read music, transpose and be proficient on an instrument. Participants will be grouped with peers.

The 2008 WCU Jazz Workshop faculty includes Dave Gibble (Arranging & Trumpet), John Swana (Trumpet), Matt Niess (Trombone), Greg Riley (Saxophone & Woodwinds), Peter Paulsen (Bass), Chris Hanning (Drums) Terry Klinefelter (Piano) and Dave Cullen (Guitar).

Summer Leadership and Marching Band Camp
July 28 - August 1 , 2008

Lead by nationall acclaimed experts, the Marching Band track will teach the fundamentals and principles to create an effective and successful performance. This is an opportunity to experience a group dynamic where everyone is committed to excellence and a program where the staff will provide detailed instruction working with contemporary music and drill.

The Director and Staff sessions offered include: Rehearsal techniques, organization and administration, leadership, drill writing, conducting, literature, band pedagogy, and technology.
