In keeping with the goals of West Chester University, it is the mission of the Department of Theatre and Dance to provide a high quality educational program for the undergraduate who wishes to use the university’s comprehensive liberal arts core curriculum as a foundation for the cognitive, empathetic, and creative skills demanded by the department’s rigorous theatre and dance training programs. This is accomplished through an extensive academic program in the classroom that is coordinated with an outstanding and diverse production season designed to provide a wide range of performance, technical, and management options for the developing theatre and dance artist.
The department has programs that lead to two undergraduate degrees and minors in both Dance and Theatre. The B.A. in Theatre Arts, with its liberal arts base and production emphasis, prepares students for graduate studies, a variety of entry-level positions in professional theatre, and for related careers in which communication skills, self-confidence, and presentation of self are held in high esteem. The B.S. degree is offered in cooperation with the Department of Communication Studies and certifies students to teach theatre, speech, and English at the middle and high school levels. The Dance minor provides the developing dance artist, in class and through performance opportunities, with forums for both learning and creative expression.
The department fulfills its mission by providing students with a faculty who bring to the classroom, the rehearsal hall, and the studio, a wide variety of professional and regional experience, as well as a background of active participation in, and leadership of, national academic organizations in the field. By extending its educational mission to the community through outreach activities and special performance programs, the department provides its students with a variety of opportunities to translate the theory and practice of the classroom into the pragmatics of the society they are training to lead.
Finally, the Department of Theatre and Dance, by providing within its academic and production programs ample opportunities for expressions of academic and artistic freedom, affirms its responsibility to support and strengthen the cultural, moral, and social fabric of our university, and the society it serves.
