Jacqueline Kelly reported that her community service experience at Victory Junction taught her how to establish relationships with parents as well as children. She said: "It is especially important when you have a student with a disability to communicate with the parents to insure all the child’s needs are being met."
Lisa Vanderslice served with a local Hospice chapter in the Sellersville, PA. Lisa was matched with a thirty year-old woman with Downs Syndrome who was losing her father to lung cancer. It was actually the father who asked Hospice for a volunteer to assist his daughter through the process of losing him. Lisa assisted Morgan (not her real name) through the grieving process by developing activities specific to her needs. Lisa spent many hours with Morgan and was careful to see that Morgan had options and opportunities as Lisa slowly decreased the frequency of her contact. To quote Lisa: "Although I took this case on to help out a family about to experience a loss, I really did gain a close friend."
