Outstanding students should apply for membership in the Alpha Mu Gamma Foreign Language Honor Society. AMG is a national organization, based at Los Angeles City College, that recognizes distinguished study in foreign languages, and in English as a Second Language for students who speak English as a foreign language. The benefits of AMG membership are many. Members are eligible for several scholarships supporting study abroad. Moreover, AMG membership is an excellent addition to a graduate's resume, as it is recognized by federal employers and the military as a sign of achievement. Certain employers even award raises in pay grade for AMG membership.
The annual deadline is in February each year. There is a one-time initiation fee of $35 (sometimes waived), and candidates may also purchase an AMG key or pin, and graduation cords for an extra fee. Once candidates are accepted for membership, these fees will be payable in the Sykes SSI office. We hold a lovely initiation ceremony each year in April which features a guest speaker with a record of service in international affairs. Candidates may invite friends and families to the event, and it has been quite festive in previous years. AMG has additional interesting group activities and get togethers throughout the year.
