The MSA degree in Training and Development (MSA:TD) prepares training and development supervisors who, in turn, will develop and coordinate in-house programs/staff development services for line managers. |

The Curriculum
The MSA:TD is comprised of 18 hour core as well as 18 hours of concentration courses. Administrative Core (18 credits) For administrative core course descriptions, please see MSA Core. Concentration Core (18 credits) Required (12 credits) COM570 Conceptual Foundation for Training and Development Examination of major schools of thought underpinning organizational training and development. Viewpoints explored for diagnostic guidance, learning implications and training technologies. COM571 Practicum in Communication, Training and Development Design and delivery of training workshops by each participant. Review and practice of the leading training technologies in communication and organizational development emphasized. ADM552 Staffing and Development Employee orientation, training and development program design and implementation emphasized. Legal and regulatory factors affecting staff selections and development examined. PSY567 Psychology and Training An overview of the training process in organizations. Topics include needs analysis and design evaluation of training programs. Cognate Courses (Six credits; three from each category) Industrial Organization Psychology PSY560 Advanced Industrial Psychology Application of individual differences, learning and attitudes to functions such as personnel selection, placement, training, and evaluation. PSY562 Organization Psychology Focus on the relation between the individual and the organization. Elements of the organization that affect behavior are considered. Research designs appropriate to individual cases are presented. PSY563 Performance Analysis An accomplishment based approach to the analysis of human performance. Topics include measurement and analysis of performance opportunities and strategies for improving performance. PSY564 Human Factors Methods and results of experimental psychology pertinent to human-machine relationship problems. Workplace design, systems approach, control and display, and man-in-space challenges are considered. Communication Studies Selected in consultation with Dr. Orr. Internship (3 credits) ADM612 Internship Required for students without sufficient, relevant, professional work experience. Internships take about ten hours per week and can be performed around a student's regular work schedule. In some cases a student may be able to do the internship at the student's current place of employment. |
