Academics: Introduction

The Department of Geography and Planning offers a number of areas or tracks that students can follow. For those who wish to have a good overall mix of geography courses, the traditional Geography track is the best choice. The Planning track offers students an opportunity to develop extensive coursework in planning such as land use planning and development, transportation, planning law, and environmental planning.

The Analysis track focuses on a new and powerful tool: Geographic Information System or GIS. Students in this track have a series of computer-oriented courses available to them which are taught in our brand new state-of-the-art GIS lab equipped with Earth System Resources, Inc. (ESRI) software (ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS 8.x), an HP plotter, a large format scanner, and other GIS and cartographic resources.

For students who would like to teach, the newly-designed Elective Citizenship Education Track offers a program in a discipline that incorporates the courses necessary for certification to teach.
