Revised June 2007

English as a Second Language

The primary function of the English as a second language (ESL) program is to assist you as a non-native speaker to complete the English requirements for admission to degree programs at West Chester University. The secondary function is to help you adjust to our academic, professional, and social environments. Started in 1990, the WCU ESL program has helped hundreds of international students learn to communicate clearly and effectively in English. All of the ESL programs are offered in the fall, spring, and summer sessions.

Programs Offered

Intensive English. If you are in intensive English, you will meet in class 25 hours per week. You will be considered a full-time student at WCU, so you can make use of all facilities, including campus housing, food services, sports and recreation, the infirmary, the library, and student services. I-20s are available if you are an international student who needs to obtain a visa before coming to study ESL at WCU. You will complete the intensive program when you pass the English requirements for admission to WCU. If you do not intend to apply for admission, you also are welcome, but you must realize that the intensive program is primarily an academic one leading to full-time study at West Chester University. Classes combine traditional topics, such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation, with newer concepts involving the integration of different skills, problem solving, and critical thinking. Field trips to local attractions are important for creating topics that will help you develop communication among other students.

Evening English. If you are in evening English, you will meet two evenings per week for a total of four hours of class per week. The focus is on American language and culture. Those who are at an advanced level are provided with special assistance to help you complete the English requirements for admission to degree programs at WCU.

Professional Development. If you are an international professional who wants to improve your English for your career, you will meet in individual and small group sessions for accent reduction, conversation, preparation of oral and written reports, listening comprehension, and a review of English grammar. Special classes for groups with additional needs are available.
