Disposal of Smoking Materials | |

Litter caused by discarded smoking materials has created an appearance problem that is difficult to correct. According to WCU’s “Policy on Smoking in University Buildings,” smoking is only permitted inside University buildings in areas designated by the Facility Administrator which are operationally feasible and well ventilated so that smoke does not enter non-smoking areas. This policy has created increased smoking at building entrances. The proliferation of discarded smoking materials outside of building entrances has become a nationwide epidemic. At West Chester University, we take pride in the beauty of our campus and are committed to preserving its charm and stateliness. Accordingly, the following policy for the control of discarded smoking materials will be implemented: 1. Each building will have one designated exterior entrance where smoking is permitted. Extra ash urns will be provided at these locations, and smokers are encouraged to properly dispose of smoking materials in the ash urns. 2. All other building entrances will be smoke free. One ash urn will be provided at these entrances to allow pedestrians approaching the building to dispose of their smoking materials. 3. Facility Administrators for each building will select the entrance to be designated as the location where smoking is permitted. For the convenience of all, it is recommended that this location be a low-traffic entrance. 4. In order to maintain a positive atmosphere and appearance for our campus buildings, Facility Administrators are requested to communicate this procedure to building occupants. Signs will also be posted to direct building users to the smoking area. As a community, maintaining a clean campus is part of our stewardship of the environment and our culture of respect for others. Self and peer enforcement of this policy is encouraged. |
