Student Awards / Scholarships

The Office of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs highlights the contributions of individual students and clubs and organizations each month through the Outstanding Volunteer of the Month Award and the Outstanding Volunteer Project of the Month Award. Nominations are due the first day of each month.

Outstanding Volunteer of the Month

Criteria: Outstanding Student Volunteers are individuals who exhibit an ongoing commitment to community service.

Who Can Nominate: Faculty, staff, students, and community partners can nominate others. Parents of WCU students are discouraged from nominating family members.

Award: Recipients receive a certificate, gift, and their name on a composite plaque in the Sykes Student Union. They also become eligible to win a $200 Volunteer Leadership Scholarship through the West Chester University Parent Fund. Two scholarships are awarded each semester.

Outstanding Volunteer Projects

Criteria: Outstanding Service Projects are community service projects that are coordinated by student clubs, organizations, and/or sports teams that show a deep commitment to our community.

Who Can Nominate: Faculty, staff, students, and community partners can nominate others. Parents of WCU students are discouraged from nominating family members.

Award: Recipients of this award receive a certificate and their name on a composite plaque in the Sykes Student Union.

Site Leaders for the Care Center Foundation, she worked with pre-school aged children in a free day care facility for low income families.

"Get Stoked" for Make-A-Wish Foundation, which raised over $2,200 for the cause.
Rebecca Starosta
October
Coordinator for Good Cause Café, which raised $1,200 for Family Services of Chester County's Project ONE, which supports individuals living with HIV/ AIDS.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Paddy Murphy Week which included a blood drive and raised $4,000 for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Samantha Turner
November
Co-founder of David's Drive 831, which is committed to improving the quality of life for hospitalized and homeless veterans as well as people in need.
Brendan Barakat
December
Volunteered with the Friars Society for several projects, including Brandywine Bingo, Thanksgiving Dinner at the ARC of Chester County, and Good Cause Café.
Abbe' and Friars Societies

The Holiday Family program raised over $9,000 for a family in need through the Crime Victims' Center of Chester County.

Volunteer at St. Agnes Day Room Educational Preparation Programs where he worked with pre-school aged children and engaged them in fun, educational activities and encouraged English language confidence.
Women's Gymnastics Team

The Unite for Her Pink Invitational Meet, which works to bridge the gap between the medical and wellness communities by educating women diagnosed with breast cancer about complementary therapies.

A Site Leader for Sankofa Academy Charter School where she worked with the Sisterhood Program and acted as a tutor and mentor for youth.

The Crime Victim's Center Collection Drive, gave needed resources to individuals and families in need.

Office of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs staff and Friars Society member who organized the McCarthy Hall move out, volunteered with Good Works and Ram Pride Day of Service.
ConKerr Cancer Committee
April/ May
ConKerr Cancer Pillowcases for a Cause program raised over $500 to make 147 pillowcases for youth dealing with terminal illnesses. The committee was made up of: Abbé Society, Alpha Phi Omega, Friars Society, Honors Student Association, Phi Mu, Phi Sigma Pi, and Sisters United.
