Minor in Astronomy

While there is no major in astronomy, the Department of Geology & Astronomy offers a minor in the subject. The astronomy minor consist of 6 courses (18 credits). Students wishing to persue the minor are required to take the following courses:

  1. ESS 111, ESS 112, or ESS 311 (up to two of these courses may count towards the minor)
  2. SCB 210
  3. ESS 307 Geology of the Solar System
  4. ESS 355 Intermediate Astronomy
  5. ESS 362 History of Astronomy
  6. ESS 491 Independent Study

Students are required to complete 3 credits of independent study with a faculty member. The exact nature of the research will be determined by the student and faculty member. A wide variety of projects are available. Past projects have included working with observational data from astronomical satellites such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory, performing individual observations using the WCU Observatory, and working on public education and outreach projects in the WCU Planetarium.
