One of Dr. Abbott’s major interests relates to professional socialization, including ethics, malpractice, and risk management. She has given numerous presentations and workshops on the topic. Most recently she spent spring break celebrating social work month by responding to invitations to speak on related topics: “Ethical Practice: A Social Worker’s Best Defense Against Malpractice” at both the Annual Program Meeting of the National Association of Social Workers—Virginia Chapter, held in Richmond Virginia, and the Annual Program Meeting of the National Association of Social Workers—Oregon Chapter, held in Portland Oregon, and “Ethics and Risk Management for Educators” at the Baccalaureate Program Directors’ annual meeting held in Portland.
Her Professional Opinion Scale, the development of which is detailed in Abbott, A.A. (1988, 2003), has been used by over 50 researchers in their measurement of social work values.
Dr. Abbott's interest in health care focuses on parity for mental health care coverage including substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. In the 1990s she was an active participant in President Clinton’s Health Care Reform initiative. Currently, she is a strong advocate of universal health care coverage.
Her early interest in substance related disorders was enhanced by her 5-year participation as a faculty fellow in a Faculty Development Grant funded by the US Public Health Service, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, US Department of Health and Human Services. The focus of the grant included concentrated study, curriculum development, and clinical experience. Dr. Abbott's post-doctoral clinical substance abuse experience included intervention with a broad range of clients and their families at two major hospitals in Philadelphia.
