Federal Work Study Student Employment Program

The purpose of the Federal Work Study Student Employment Program is to stimulate and promote the

part-time employment of students enrolled as degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, in need of earnings to assist in payment of their course of study AND to encourage those students to participate in community service activities that will benefit the Nation and engender in the students a sense of social responsibility and commitment to the community.

To apply for the Federal Work Study Student Employment Program complete and submit this application AND the 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible in compliance with the March 1st priority deadline.

The FAFSA is used to determine your financial eligibility NEED for participation in the program. Please indicate your interest in work-study by your response to the work study question on your FAFSA. This Application is used to determine your job placement.

West Chester University’s Federal Work Study Student Employment Program is a “Need based” federally funded program. Funds are limited and students must meet the federal regulations governing the program. All students will not be offered nor qualify for the Federal Work Study Student Employment Program.

The value of your Federal Work Study (FWS) will appear, as an award, in your financial aid package.  You will receive notification from our office regarding your eligibility and you will also have access to this information on-line at MYWCU at www.wcupa.edu.  Students receive direct compensation, on a bi-weekly basis, for the hours worked. As such, awards will not appear as anticipated aid on the account summary/bill. All funds earned are part of your aid package and   are to be used for educational related expenses.

New students will receive notification, in the spring, once “packaging” begins. If you have satisfied the admissions deposit requirement you will also have access to your financial aid package via myWCU @wcupa.edu.

Currently enrolled students are encouraged to secure the signature of a representative of the department/agency in which they desire employment. “Packaging” will not occur until spring grades are posted and academic progress has been determined.

Contracts containing the details of the student’s assignment will be mailed to eligible students beginning in mid-June. Please check your WCU email and monitor your aid package via myWCU, for financial aid alerts on a regular basis.

FWS participants may only hold one job processed by the WCU Payroll Office. When this happens the student will be removed from the Federal Work Study Program. Since most additional offers are made through an application/selection process the student is aware of the potential for this to occur. Students are under no obligation to accept the Federal Work Study Student Employment offer.

Reporting to work - Students should report to work the first week of the session they are assigned to work, to avoid being reported as a NO SHOW. Supervisors should confirm the student's employment status BEFORE permitting the student to begin work. Only ACTIVE students are authorized to begin work.
