Frequently Asked Questions by Parents & Families

Where is the Career Development Center located and when is it open?

We are located on the 2nd floor of Lawrence Hall, directly above the main dining hall on campus. Our hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters and 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during summer sessions.

What does the Career Development Center do?

The Center provides services, programs, and resources which assist students and alumni with implementing and securing satisfying careers. We meet with students during individual appointments as well as group workshops and seminars.  The Center offers job postings, resume writing and interview preparation assistance, career fairs, and on-campus recruiting opportunities.

Who does the Career Development Center assist?

We work with all current West Chester University students in any major or classification. We also assist alumni and employers.

Does my student need an appointment to speak with a staff member?

Students may drop by the Center any time to ask a staff member a question, use the extensive collection of resources in the Career Resource Library, or pick up free magazines and literature to help with job search or graduate study.  We encourage students to schedule appointments in advance for more in-depth career planning assistance by calling 610-436-2501.

When should my student first come to the Career Development Center?

Because the Center offers resources and programs to help students explore majors and careers, students are encouraged to begin using and become familiar with the Center starting with their first year on campus.  The range of services available can assist students of all class years, not just seniors who are looking for a job.

When is the best time for my student to register with the Career Development Center?

We encourage all students to log in to their account in Ram Career Network as early as possible and update their profile and upload a resume to take maximum advantage of the resources we offer.

What is Ram Career Network?

Ram Career Network is the online, one-stop career portal for WCU students, alumni, and employers. Hundreds of jobs and internships will be posted weekly just for the WCU community; students and alumni will also be able to access state-wide and national networks of other jobs, all in one convenient location!

All WCU students have an account in Ram Career Network and log in using their WCU ID and password; alumni are able to use an email of their choice as their login ID.

Can the Career Development Center help my student choose a major?

Yes! FOCUS is an online program students can use to explore their interests and get concrete information about what types of careers are available to students in various majors.  We recommend students meet with a professional in person to then get referrals to FOCUS or other assessment tools. Our resource room contains books such as College Majors & Careers to help students identify options.  We work with academic departments and the Pre-Major Advising office to refer students to appropriate on-campus resources and staff.

How can the Career Development Center help my student find a job?

The Center utilizes Ram Career Network as its primary job posting system; employers interested in hiring WCU students may post jobs for free within the system. The Center coordinates several career fairs each year, bringing employers to campus to speak with students.  Additionally, many employers conduct on-campus interviews within the Center each semester.  Job posting binders, directories, and other employment resources are available in the Center’s library. We encourage students to schedule a one-on-one appointment for advice tailored to their particular interests.

My student has just graduated. Can the Career Development Center still provide help?

West Chester alumni may use the Center’s services at any time in the future.
