Peer Mentor Position

Responsibilities:

  • Provide personal assistance to students participating in the Mentoring Program.
  • Assist in the development of skills necessary for mentees to succeed at WCU.
  • Guide in developing realistic goals and expectations for the mentees.
  • Encourage, motivate, and guide mentees toward achieving academic excellence.
  • Serve as a role model, resource, confidante, and friend.
  • Refer mentees to appropriate departments, staff, and resources.
  • Participate in orientation and training programs to enhance skills for effective mentoring.
  • Commit to serve as a mentor for at least one academic year.
  • Encourage mentees to foster his/her own personal development by attending co-curricular programs.
  • Meet with mentees at a minimum three times per month.
  • Establish standard times to meet with mentees.
  • Work closely with the Coordinator of Mentoring Program.
  • Maintain confidentiality, except in case of emergency.
  • Submit summaries of meetings with mentees twice a month or as needed.
  • Maintain good academic and judicial standing.
  • Accompany mentees to planned programs and events.

Remuneration:
      10 hrs per week at $7.50/hr

Requirements:
  1. Peer Mentors must have earned 24 credits or more prior to becoming a staff member with the OMA office.
  2. Peer Mentors must possess and maintain a semester and cumulative GPA of  a 2.5.
  3. Peer Mentors must be able to keep information provided with confidential.
  4. Peer Mentors must be a role model, possess a positive attitude, and an ability to work well with people from all backgrounds.
  5. Peer Mentors must be in good academic and judicial standing at WCU.
  6. Preference given to those students who reside on North Campus.

     Spring Semester of each academic year
