The Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Position: Peer Mentor

Responsibilities:

  • Provide personal assistance to students participating in the Mentoring Program;

  • Help in the development of skills necessary for mentee to succeed at WCU;

  • Establish list of expectations for mentees;       

  • Guide mentee in the development of goals;

  • Motivate mentee toward achieving excellence;

  • Serve as a role model; resource person, confidante and friend;

  • Refer mentee to appropriate departments and/or staff;

  • Participate in mentoring orientation program;

  • Commit to serve as mentor for at least one academic year;

  • Encourage mentee to foster his/her own development by attending co-curricular programs;

  • Meet with mentees once per week;

  • Meet with Coordinator of Mentoring Program on a weekly basis;

  • Maintain confidentiality, except in cases of emergency;

  • Submit summaries of meetings with mentee once per week.

Remuneration:

  • Minimum $6.00 per hour @ 8 hours per week.

Requirements:

  1. Peer Mentors must have earned 24 credits or more prior to becoming a staff member with the OMA office.

  2. Peer Mentors must possess a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5.

  3. Peer Mentors must be able to keep information she/he is provided with confidential.

  4. Peer Mentors must possess a positive attitude and an ability to work well with people from all backgrounds.

  5. Peer Mentors must be in good academic and judicial standing at WCU.

Application Period:
All positions have been filled for 2005-2006 - check back in the fall for 2006-2007 info.
