Bryan Burton, Professor and Chairperson of Music Education and Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, hold’s bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from West Texas State University, Western State College of Colorado, and the University of Southern Mississippi, respectively. His interest in intercultural music education has taken him as both researcher and lecturer to over thirty stares, Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and New Zealand. He is the author, co-author, or contributing author of over forty books in the field of intercultural music education and music education including Moving Within the circle: Contemporary Native American Music and Dance 2nd Edition, Voices of the Wind: Native American Flute Songs, When the Earth Was Like New: Western Apache Songs and Stories (with Ruth and Chesley Wilson), Welcome to Mussomelli: Children’s Song from an Italian Country Town (with Rosella Diliberto), Multicultural Perspectives in Music Education, Second Edition (edited by William Anderson and Patricia Sheehan Campbell), Making Connections: Multicultural Music and the National Standards (edited by William Anderson and Marvelene Moore), Multicultural Music and Music Education: Facing the Issues (edited by Bennett Reimer), and the Silver, Burdett & Ginn basal series Making Music, online teaching manuals for several texts in Oxford’s Global Music Series (South India, East Africa, West Africa, Brazil, Central Java, First Nations in Canada) and for Michael Bakan’s World Musics: Traditions and Transformations. He is also noted for his work in research methodology and music education philosophy. Of mixed Native American and European descent, his long-standing interest in the music of the original inhabitants of North America has led him to meet and work with many musicians and tribal leaders and he has shared their social dances and songs with music teachers in over 200 workshops and presentations at state, national and international music education conferences. He is currently Chair of the Education Section of the Society for Ethnomusicology, on the Editorial Committee for International Journal of Music Education (a journal of the International Society for Music Education), Contributing Editor for the New Grove Dictionary of American Music 2nd Edition, columnist for General Music Today, and member of the Board of Advisors for Native Cultures. Dr. Burton has served in numerous other leadership capacities within the music education profession including Editorial Advisory Board for Teaching Music, Eastern Division Chair for the Society for Music Teacher Education, the Music Education Advisory Committee for the College Music Society, and the Commission on Community Music Activities for the International Society for Music Education. He is listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in America, Marquis Who’s Who in the World, Marquis Who’s Who in American Education, and Marquis Who’s Who in Entertainment.
During the past year, Dr. Burton has presented papers and workshops for the Australian Society for Music Education, Northern California Association of Kodaly Educators, Delaware Music Educators Association, Society for Ethnomusicology, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 11 In-Service, Organization of American Kodaly Educators Eastern Division Fall Tune-up, New York State School Music Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Society for American Music, Cultural Diversity on Music Education World Conference and the International Society for Music Education World Conference, Bologna, Italy.
