Dr. Winters completed his dissertation, which analyzes compositional techniques in the experimental works of American composer Charles Ives, in 1986 under the guidance of music theorist Eugene Narmour. Before joining the West Chester faculty, Dr. Winters taught at both the University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University. He is a past secretary/treasurer of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the American Musicological Society and the former Director of Music at the Baptist Church in the Great Valley in Devon, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Winterss recent scholarly work concerns the music of both Samuel Barber and Charles Ives. Many of the events of West Chesters Samuel Barber Festival in the fall of 1999 were coordinated by Dr. Winters, and he presented a paper on this composers formative years. Dr. Winterss article on additive and repetitive techniques in the music of Charles Ives has been accepted for publication in the American Music Research Center Journal.
