Student Spotlight

Name: Kayla Parkinson

Major: Theatre

Hometown: Perkasie, PA

Expected Graduation: May 2014

Why did you decide to attend West Chester University?

I loved the proximity to Philadelphia and because I came into WCU undeclared, I knew there were many options for me. I also had heard that WCU had a great Department of Theatre and Dance so that also influenced my decision greatly.

What is your favorite thing about the Department of Theatre and Dance?

That we are taught all aspects of theatre. We aren't allowed to just be an actor, or a director, or a technician. We are given the opportunity to try everything and learn all aspects of theatre. Actors also know how to hang lights and technicians also are able to perform onstage if needed. Our department makes sure that we are well-rounded before we leave here, and therefore we are more employable.

What didn't you know about the Department of Theatre and Dance before you came to WCU?

I didn't know that anyone attending WCU can get involved in the theatre and dance productions here. Anyone can audition for our season's shows, which is awesome, and some of the students actually end up transferring into the department as minors/majors because of that.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

I would like to continue stage managing (having been an assistant on several theatre and dance productions, and now stage managing our musical this fall), hopefully starting with a internship or assistant position after graduation. I'm hoping to move to  New York City to pursue my career there!

What would you like to tell students considering WCU or the Department of Theatre and Dance?

If you are considering joining our department, talk to us! Take an intro level class and see if you like it!  I had never considered stage managing before talking to a professor here who thought it would be a good fit for me. There are so many people in many different areas of theatre and dance here that would be more than willing to help you figure out where you could fit in to the best of your abilities.
