Beardsley also designed the programs for some of [his school´s] entertainments. His most ambitious achievement was....for the Christmas musical The Pay of the Pied Piper, performed on December 19, 1888. Not only did he design the program, but the costumes as well....This virtuoso performance - from program and costume design to parts in the prologue and the play - was by a nonstudent: he had withdrawn from Brighton Grammar School by the time the entertainment was held. And had to return to play in it....
The Christmas holidays of 1891 bore an additional promise....the Rev. C.G. Thornton, a Brighton parson who had known Beardsley in his school days, had urged Aymer Villance [a member of the William Morris circle] to look up the promising boy...in what may have been a burst of Christmas spirit, Vllance journeyed to Pimlico and spent an afternoon examining the drawings Beardsley had arranged for him....Vallance was impressed by its quantity as well as its quality.
