Logo Policies

Policy on the Use of the University Seal, University and Athletic Logos, and University Stationery

In the interest of providing a uniform image for the University, individual logotypes or seals may not be used by schools, departments, or other academic and administrative units of the University. Requests for exceptions to this policy should be made in writing to the Office of Publications and Printing Services.

There may be times when a logotype or design motif is developed for a special event or a continuing series of activities sponsored by a University unit. These must, however, have advance clearance from the Office of Publications and Printing Services. Such clearances are designed to ensure the quality of materials being used to avoid image problems.

Exceptions to the logotype policy will be made principally for units of the University that have a special mission. The exceptions will be granted only after approval of written justification. Examples include the Capital Campaign, Annual Fund, and George Morris Philips Society. This policy does not apply to the logos of student organization.

University Seal

WCU University Seal

The University seal is the official identification of West Chester University. The seal is used on official ceremonial and academic documents such as commencement and dedication programs, and certificates.

University Logo

WCU Logo

The logo is a graphic interpretation of Philips Memorial Building, which provides a unique, recognizable symbol of West Chester University. With its long history, Philips connotes a sense of tradition, yet its late 1990's renovation will ensure its status as the cornerstone building on campus into the future as well.

The logo should not be altered or modified in any way, and it should not be blended with other designs, such as old logos, the University seal, the athletic symbol, organization logos, drawings, or additional lettering. The building portion of the logo is not to be used apart from the lettering; both elements must remain in the box surrounding them. The official color for the logo is purple (Pantone 269); although it may be used in other colors, the preference is to use it in purple or black. The logo should not be reversed out (white knocked out from a colored background); rather, a white outline around the logo should be used so the logo will remain in color. The background within the box behind the building should not be filled in with any color and should remain white. The type font is Clearface. The logo cannot be used in a smaller format than it appears on the envelope and business card, 5/8" wide x 1" high.

The logo must appear on all official University stationery, publications, and announcements. All units of the University except student organizations will use the standard University letterhead with departmental imprint. Any student organization using the University's official symbols must follow the regulations for publications, Web sites, clothing, or other materials.

Stationery (University Logo)

Letterhead

The logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the page. The rule, which ties together the address, phone number(s), and Web site must be present and remain a constant element perpendicular to the logo; the rule is not to be moved up or down. Type elements are the office name and address printed flush left above the rule with the telephone and fax numbers and University Web site printed flush right; the University's e-mail address follows the phone numbers. Addresses may include the building name and room number. Stationery is not to be personalized with individual names or e-mail addresses. Official letterhead will be printed in University purple on 20# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory paper. The line "West Chester University of Pennsylvania is a member of the State System of Higher Education" is centered at the bottom of the sheet and must appear on the letterhead.

Envelopes

The logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the return address, with the office name; building and room number (optional); institution name; and city, state, and zip code printed to the immediate right of the logo. A rule, which is perpendicular to the logo, follows the bottom line of the address. This rule must remain constant and cannot be moved up or down. Official envelopes will be printed in University purple on 24# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory, matching the stationery stock.

The use of department rubber stamps on stationery or envelopes is not permitted.

Business Cards

The logo appears in the upper-left corner of the card. The person's name and title (degrees are optional) are flush left above the rule, which is perpendicular to the logo and must remain a constant element on the card; it cannot be moved up or down. Building and room locations; city, state, and zip; phone and fax numbers; and e-mail address are flush right below the rule. A maximum of five lines of type can be used above the rule and five lines below the rule (no exceptions). No home addresses or phone numbers are permitted. Official business cards will be printed in University purple on 80# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory.

Personalized Memo Sheets and Action Pads

Personalized memo sheets with your name, title, office, and phone number(s) have been designed to include the Philips logo. The pads will be white stock with University purple ink. Action pads with your name and title will be printed in black ink on white stock.

The above items - letterhead, envelopes, business cards, personalized memo sheets, and action pads - are all considered official University stationery and must follow the established graphic design without exceptions or individualized preferences. Official stationery is available in the Graphics and Printing Department, located in the Warehouse on Matlack Street.

Athletic Logo/Mascot

Golden Ram Logo

The Golden Ram logo is a modern graphic approach to West Chester University athletics. With its long history, the ram connects a sense of tradition with the modern day era of WCU athletics. The logo should not be altered or modified in any way (including caricatures), and it should not be blended with any other designs, such as the Philips logo, old logos, the University seal, organization logos, drawings, or additional lettering.

There are two versions of the ram logo. One is just the ram, while the other has both the ram and circular "West Chester University" around its circumference. Either may be used, but it is preferred that the ram by itself be used when "West Chester University" appears somewhere else on the cover of the publication.

The official colors for the logo are purple (Pantone 269) and metallic gold (Pantone 871). While the preferred gold is metallic, Pantone 123 can be substituted if necessary. The logo is to be used in one color (purple preferred) or two colors (purple and gold), or in black. The logo should not be reversed out (white knocked out from a colored background); rather, a white outline around the ram logo should be used so the ram will remain in color. The font is Clearface. The logo cannot be used in a smaller format than it appears on the envelope and business card (5/8" wide x 1" high).

WCU Cipher

The WCU cipher is a graphic interpretation of West Chester University's acronym specifically designed for athletics. It provides a unique, recognizable symbol of West Chester University athletics. The cipher should not be altered or modified in any way, and it should not be blended with any other designs, such as the new WCU logo, an older version of the WCU cipher, the University seal, organization logos, drawings, or additional lettering.

The official colors for the cipher are purple (Pantone 269) and metallic gold (Pantone 871). While the preferred gold is metallic, Pantone 123 can be substituted if necessary. The cipher is to be used in one color (purple preferred) or two colors (purple and gold), or in black. The WCU cipher may be reversed out (white knocked out from a colored background). Since the type is a stylized font, it should not be reproduced without an official electronic version that can be obtained from the Sports Information Office, the Office of Publications and Printing Services, or the Graphics and Printing Department. The cipher cannot be used in a smaller format than what would appear on an envelope and business card (5/8" wide x 1" high).

Stationery (Ram Logo)

Letterhead

The ram logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the page. The rule, which ties together the address and phone number, must be present and remain a constant element perpendicular to the logo; the rule is not to be moved up or down. Type elements are the office name and address printed flush left above the rule with the telephone and fax numbers printed flush right. Office (not personal) e-mail address can follow the phone numbers. Addresses may include the building name and room number. The Graphics and Printing Department has the official list of athletic department addresses. Official letterhead will be printed in purple on 20# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory paper. The athletic Web site will be located at the bottom above the letterhead above the State System of Higher Education tag line.

Envelopes

The ram logo is printed in the upper-left corner of the return address, with the office name; building and room number (optional); institution name; and city, state, and zip code printed to the immediate right of the logo. A rule, which is perpendicular to the logo, follows the bottom line of the address. The rule must remain constant and cannot be moved up or down. Official envelopes will be printed in purple on 24# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory, matching the stationery stock. Graphics and Printing has the official list of athletic department return addresses.

Business Cards

The Ram logo appears in the upper-left corner of the card. The person's name and title (degrees are optional) are flush left above the rule, which is perpendicular to the logo and must remain a constant element on the card; it cannot moved up or down. Building and room locations; city, state, and zip; phone and fax numbers; and e-mail address are flush right below the rule. Note: A maximum of five lines of type can be used above the rule and five lines below the rule (no exceptions). No home addresses or phone numbers are permitted. Official business cards will be printed in purple on 80# Classic Crest Baronial Ivory card stock.

The above items - letterhead, envelopes and business cards - are all considered official University stationery and must follow the established graphic design without exceptions or individualized preferences. Official stationery is available in Graphic and Printing.

Questions should be addressed to Cynthia Bednar, director of publications and printing services, 610-436-2231, or James Zulhke, sports information director, 610-436-3316.

Official Colors

The official University colors are purple (PMS 269) and gold (PMS 123).
