Departmental Academic Advising Liaisons
to the University Academic Advising Committee Roles and Characteristics:

Roles:

  1. Serve as a conduit of information to the department from the UAAC and back to the UAAC from the department
  2. Participate in on-campus professional development activities promoting quality academic advising
  3. Encourage/enable good academic advising practices
  4. Serve as a resource/referral guide for faculty academic advisors
  5. Participate on a large university-wide “academic advising forum” to facilitate the exchange of best practices
  6. Interact with students in departmental majors/programs to discuss academic advising issues

Characteristics:

  1. “Student Centered”
  2. An understanding of developmental advising and how it relates to the needs of both advisees and advisors
  3. Actively engaged in the academic advising process, based upon the developmental advising theory
  4. While not necessarily an “expert” academic advisor, serve as a role model for peer academic advisors
  5. Interest in professional development in academic advising
  6. Intrinsic motivation
  7. Good communicator (good listener)
