LECTURES

Tuesday, March 16, 7 p.m. Colleen Clemens a scholar in Postcolonial Literature, will present a talk about “the rhetoric of veiling” or how the idea of one essential “veil” is used in U.S. political rhetoric and in popular culture. Once Islam entered the U.S. national discourse after Sept. 11, the veil became a powerful symbol of women’s oppression under the Taliban and in the East. The idea of the veil impacts specific political climates currently. Clemens will discuss Turkey and Egypt’s current veiling policies to illustrate that the veil holds different meaning in different contexts to debunk the notion that there is such a thing as the veil. This program is sponsored by the Department of Woman’s Studies. Information: Tara Musser  TMusser@wcupa.edu. Philips Autograph Library, Philips Memorial Building.

Thursday, March 18, 12:30 – 2 p.m. Lunchtime lecture with Vicki McGinley and Nora McGinley-Hence on “Diversity in Learning: Cyber Homeschooling.” A first-year college student’s views on her education, with input from a resistant parent and professional, and an exploration of the implications for diversity in learning.
