Deanna Harbaugh and Gabe DiBerardinis are graduate students in the M.ED in School Counseling program leading to school counselor certifications in both elementary and secondary counseling.
Both agree that attending a CACREP accredited school influenced their decision to enroll in West Chester University’s counseling program. “I decided I wanted to attend a school that was CACREP accredited. West Chester University’s Counselor Education program has this accreditation yet it’s almost half the cost of other schools in the region and this made it stand out to me” said Gabe.
According to Deanna, the counseling program is very thorough. She adds that students are exposed to all aspects of counseling, including individual, group, developmental guidance, and career counseling. “One of my first classes in the program exposed me to individual counseling, where I worked with a volunteer client to practice my counseling skills” added Deanna. West Chester’s Counselor Education program offers many field experiences allowing for practical, hands-on experience. Gabriel stated that he learns best by using hands-on activities and is fortunate to have the opportunity to enter three field experiences where he had the opportunity to work with clients of all ages. He added “You can learn about the theories of counseling and various techniques, but there is nothing like practicing with an actual client and getting real experience.”
But, what impresses Deanna most are the faculty in the counseling department who share a wealth of real experience and true outcomes that they bring into the classroom. Gabe added that he was further impressed by the support of the faculty outside of the classroom. For example, the department chair met with him over the summer and personally advised and registered him for his classes. “That really meant a lot to me. It let me know I wasn’t just a number here,” remarked Gabe.
