WCU’s Annual Banana Day on April 18 ----- It’s Baaaaaaacck!

West Chester University Banana Day 2016

WCU's annual Banana Day will take place Wednesday, April 18, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. all over campus, with lots of the banana fun happening at 12 p.m. as students move through the Academic Quad! Banana Day is a special student rite of spring at WCU, and features the doling out of 3,000+ free bananas at almost every corner of campus, peeling around corners in banana and gorilla costumes, and competing in a bunch of banana-themed games all over the University to win coveted limited-edition Banana Day t-shirts. The best banana action will be found on the Academic Quad, Residential Quad, Sykes Student Union, and Swope Music Building. View Campus Map.

Among the Banana Day game highlights this year will be Banana Operation, where students will take a banana apart and then put it back together again with toothpicks and tape. Other games will include the traditional Banana Toss (similar to an egg toss), Hot Banana, and much more. As a limited edition with only a quantity of 1,500, the Banana Day t-shirt is a secret design-in-the making every year, and is only revealed on Banana Day. Until they last, the specially-designed t-shirts will be given to winners of banana games throughout the day.

What happens to the thousands of banana peels that will be left? The bananas will not go to waste. They will be composted at a nearby facility! Stationed at compost bins around campus, volunteers will encourage all Banana Day enthusiasts to dispose their banana peels in an eco-friendly manner. The composting effort is being coordinated by the Sustainability Advisory Council and the Student Activities Council.

Banana Day is literally a winner. WCU's Student Activities Council submitted a video of the University's 22 year-old ritual to the National Association for Campus Activities' "Your Best Campus Tradition" Competition for 2018, and won first place among universities that enroll 5000+ students! The award was presented to WCU's Student Activities Council during the 2018 NACA National Convention in Boston, MA, which drew over 2,000 university student affairs professionals.

A great stress-reducer for students prior to exams, Banana Day was founded in 1996 by WCU alumnus Rodolfo "Rudy" Tellez, who organized the distribution of thousands of bananas across campus as a way to celebrate WCU spirit.
