For the second consecutive year, the beautiful Borough of West Chester tops the 2018 list of Best College Towns according to HighSpeedInternet.com (HSI).As befits the entity that compiled the list, internet connectivity is a prime factor they considered when they set their tool “The U.S. City You Should be Living In” to search for criteria that should be important to college students. They also evaluated low cost of living, walkability, low crime rate, and a predominantly single and educated population. The algorithm uses data from sites across the web, including Census.gov, Obrella.com, Safewise.com, C2ER, City-Data.com, Kelly Norton, and Walk Score. “We adapted this tool to find cities with an ideal environment for college students,” notes HSI staffer Rachel Oaks.

inaugural Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste Frederick Douglass Institute LectureOn Oct. 13, before a rapt, standing-room-only audience, Dr. C. James Trotman, WCU professor emeritus of English and author of Frederick Douglass: A Biography, delivered the inaugural Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste Frederick Douglass Institute Lecture.

In “Finding the North Star Today,” Trotman discussed the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion in today’s America, drawing inspiration from Douglass’ writings in his abolitionist newspaper The North Star, and his three autobiographies, as well as from Douglass’ famed oratorical prowess.

Among those in attendance were the Honorable Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste, first African American mayor of West Chester Borough, who generously endowed this lecture series, and his daughter Lillian DeBaptiste; current Mayor Dianne Herrin; and Christian Awuyah, WCU English professor and director of the WCU Frederick Douglass Institute.
