Recommended Student Computer Configuration

Looking to buy your student a new computer? Need a little help?

MAC or PC?

90% of our campus uses Windows. However, if you are looking to buy a new machine, your major can help determine your choice. Departments such as Music, Art, and Education use MACs and have software to run on MACs. Other departments use Windows PCs. However, any department that uses MACs also has a MAC lab, which means, even if you don't own a MAC, you can use one.

NOTE: Technical support for students with MAC computers is only available through ResNet Central.

Recommended Computer Specs for Windows Computers

Computer Part Specs
Operating System Windows 7/Windows 8/Windows 10 (Basic, Home, Premium, Ultimate Editions)
Processor Industry standard processor (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor or higher, AMD Athlon 64 X2, AMD Turion 64 X2, etc.)
  • 2 GB (minimum for 32 bit systems)
  • 3 GB (recommended for 32 bit systems)
  • 3 GB (minimum for 64 bit systems)
  • 4 GB or more (recommended for 64 bit systems)

NOTE: 32 bit systems cannot use all of 4 GB of memory, so unless you have a 64-bit machine, getting the extra GB will not give you the performance boost you are looking for.

Hard Drive 300 GB minimum / at least 500GB recommended
Networking Wireless capability
Other CD and/or CD/DVD combo drive with CD burning capabilities

Software Applications

All of the software recommended or required is available for free download at the ResNet Software page.

  • Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013* or equivalent such as Open Office
  • Anti-Virus Software (Antivirus is MANDATORY to connect to the Residential Network
  • Anti-Spyware Software (i.e., Windows Defender for Windows 7)
  • Windows 8 and later includes an updated version of Defender that provides full antvirus protection.

For current WCU students Microsoft Office is available for free download.

Many anti-virus programs include anti-spyware. We use Microsoft Security Essentials, which does include anti-spyware. It is free and can be downloaded from our ResNet Software page. Windows 8 and later come with a version of Defender which is now a full fledged antivirus program.

IMPORTANT!!!!! - NEVER install multiple antivirus programs! This could damage your drive and destroy your data!

  • Flash Drive (also known as a "Pocket Drive" or "Thumb Drive"
  • Ethernet (network) cable of 15' or more
  • Security Cable-Lock/Device (for laptops)

  • Brand names are not the best way to choose PCs. Their quality can change dramatically year to year. Read online reviews for any brand you are considering.
  • Remember to use your Student ID for discounts.
  • Look into insurance, especially for coverage that includes accidents.
