Bereavement Skills and "Complicated" Grief

Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 10am-12pm

East Parlor, St Joseph's Hall, Chestnut Hill College

The purpose of this presentation is to explore the meaning of bereavement and to discuss basic bereavement skills and the multidimensional depths of grief. The discussion will include the “companioning” approach to caregiving and the essential qualities of caregivers. The presentation will also look at some of the areas of “complicated” grief, e.g., sudden, violent death; multiple losses (bereavement overload); suicide; and the distinction between “complicated” and “pathological” mourning. The strategies discussed are also applicable to other types of loss, e.g., PTSD; traumatic brain injury; and grievous wounds.

This presentation will discuss the various dimensions of bereavement and will assist participants in learning strategies for caring for those who are dealing with traumatic loss. The presentation will include the participation of all present as we talk together about these difficult but necessary issues.
