THE MADELYN GUTWIRTH PRIZE IN WOMEN'S STUDIES

The Madelyn Gutwirth Endowment in Women's Studies was established to honor one of the founding members of the Women's Studies Program at West Chester University.

Madelyn Gutwirth initiated our first women's studies course in 1971. Coordinating the program until 1978, she remained the intellect and heart behind its developing curricula until her retirement in 1991. We now have a B.A. in Women's and Gender Studies, and the Women's and Gender Studies Department includes faculty and courses from 12 different departments. None of this would have been possible without Dr. Gutwirth's unflagging efforts not only as an instigator, but as a feminist scholar. Dr. Gutwirth's major works Madame de Stael: novelist: The Emergence of the Artist as Woman (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1978), and The Twilight of the Goddess: Women and Representation in the French Revolution Era (New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1992), rise to the highest standards of research, analysis, and interpretation. The Society for Eighteenth century studies recently devoted a plenary session to the impact of her work on feminist studies.

Women's and Gender Studies established the Madelyn Gutwirth Endowment to acknowledge Madelyn's role in the department and to continue her contributions by making it possible permanently to underwrite scholarships for students, provide additional programming, enable the presence of guest scholars, and support faculty research. Your support to the endowment allows the department to continue this important work.
