Real Estate at WCU
The Department of Geography and Planning offers two programs in Real Estate: a Certificate
in Real Estate and a Minor in Real Estate and Land Development.
Certificate in Real Estate
This 12-credit Certificate has two required courses and two electives. The program
offers a broad exposure to the practice of real estate and focused understanding in
a chosen area of specialization within the real estate industry. Upon successful completion
of the two required courses, you will qualify to take the Pennsylvania Real Estate
Salesperson exam. Pennsylvania requires residential real estate salespersons to pass
the Real Estate Salesperson exam to be licensed.
Course Requirements
Minor in Real Estate and Land Development
This 18-credit minor has three required courses and three electives. The program offers
an overview of the key areas of real estate, including the development process, finance,
law, and location analytics. The minor prepares students for a variety of careers
in commercial real estate, real estate development, land development, and related
fields. The minor aligns well with several major programs, especially those in Business,
as well as Urban and Environmental Planning, Geography, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Real Estate Certificate
As a sub-baccalaureate certificate, the program and its courses are open to both degree-seeking
undergraduate students, and non-degree students who meet the minimum university admission
requirements.
The program requires 12 credits. You will need to complete four 3-credit classes to
earn the certificate. Two classes are required: PLN 201 Real Estate Fundamentals and
PLN 202 Real Estate Practice. You can select the two additional courses from an approved
list of elective courses.
For a degree-seeking student, as long as the courses count toward degree completion
(including the 120-credit requirement), they are eligible for federal financial aid.
A non-degree student may not be eligible for federal financial aid to cover the courses.
Degree-seeking students can request to add the certificate to their course of study
through RamPortal . In the Add a Program section of the form, select Certificate. In the department
dropdown field, select Geography and Planning, and click the “Program Lookup” button.
Select Real Estate.
Non-degree seeking students should apply to the University as a non-degree student.

Real Estate and Land Development Minor
Only degree-seeking students at WCU can enroll in the Real Estate and Land Development
minor.
The program requires 18 credits. You will need to complete six 3-credit classes to
earn the minor. Three classes are required: PLN 324 Real Estate Development; PLN 328
Real Estate Law OR PLN 322 Land Development Controls; and GEO 325 Introduction to
Business GIS. You can select the three additional courses from an approved list of
elective courses.
Students can request to add the minor to their course of study through RamPortal . In the Add a Program section of the form, select Minor. In the department dropdown
field, select Geography and Planning, and click the “Program Lookup” button. Select
Real Estate and Land Development.
