WCU’s Department of Art + Design is exhibiting two new gallery works in the month of October. Gallery exhibits are FREE and open to the public from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Making Her MarkFrom October 10 – October 28: Making Her Mark: The Graphic Design Legacy of Peggy Hill. An Exhibition of WCU Graphic and Interactive Design Alumni will be on display in Knauer Gallery, Swope Music Building and Performing Arts Center, 817 S. High Street, West Chester. A closing reception will be held on October 27 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.

From October 24 – December 9: Not that Brandywine Tradition is displayed in the John H. Baker Gallery, E.O. Bull Center for the Arts, 2 E. Rosedale Avenue, West Chester. An opening reception takes place on Wednesday, October 26th, from 4 - 7 p.m.

"Not that Brandywine Tradition is dedicated to the resilience of the ceramics students from the Spring 2020 semester," says ceramics professor Andrew Snyder.

The work on display in Not that Brandywine Tradition is made by regional artists, WCU alums, and current students with clay harvested from Chester County. These artists used the same process that clay students used in the Spring of 2020.

Snyder says, “In the Spring of 2020, rather than have my students write papers about ceramics, I wanted them to be creative problem solvers. I challenged them to prospect, harvest, and prepare their own clay using only the things around their home. I helped them along with a series of YouTube tutorials. Since this project was the definition of experiential learning, I was not concerned if they found clay. It was the process that mattered. I had never harvested my own clay, so I was just as much the student as my students. I assumed that most students would not find clay, but to my delight they ALL found clay."

“If there is a silver lining from my remote teaching experience, it is the Wild Clay Harvesting Project,” adds Snyder.
