First Lady Jill Biden M’82 Invites Mitzi Colin Lopez ’21 to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address
First Lady Jill Biden M’82 has invited Mitzi Colin Lopez ’21 to be among those guests seated in her viewing box as President Joe Biden addresses a Joint Session of Congress at the United States Capitol on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 9 p.m. A political science major while at WCU, Mitzi is an advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.
At just three years old, Mitzi’s parents brought her to the United States from Mexico. She grew up only knowing the United States as her home. As a DREAMer, she applied for and received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in 2015.
Mitzi, who is currently a digital ad content creator, graduated Summa Cum Laude from WCU with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2021.
In 2021, Mitzi was the recipient of the 1871 Award, which honors students for their outstanding accomplishments related to academics, leadership, community engagement, and career readiness.
Prior to the 1871 Award, Mitzi was the recipient of a scholarship that was presented during Hispanic Heritage Month in 2018:
Upon accepting the scholarship, Mitzi said, “It truly means a lot to me. … It gives me the opportunity to become a part of such an amazing organization with members who genuinely want to see all of the students succeed. …I will continue to work hard to achieve my goals and to show what great work our community can do.”
