West Chester University Launches New Sports Media Production CertificateSports Media Production Certificate Now at WCU

West Chester University is proud to announce the launch of its new Sports Media Production Certificate, designed to provide undergraduate students with hands-on experience and essential skills for careers in sports media and sports broadcasting. This 12-credit certificate program will officially begin in Fall 2025 and is open to students of all majors who wish to enhance their expertise in sports media production.

The Sports Media Production Certificate equips students with the knowledge and technical skills required for both on-air and behind-the-scenes roles in the dynamic world of the sports media industry. Participants will develop a deep understanding of the production process, strengthen their writing and editing abilities, and learn ethical principles to critically assess media content.

Professor of Communications Mike Boyle says, "A focus on sports media production is something that students have been asking for and really is important given the tremendous growth in sports media across a range of platforms. Many students want to pursue this career path and this certificate will better prepare them to be successful in this competitive industry."

A total of 12 credit hours are needed to earn a certificate. Introduction to Sports Media Production (MDC 211) and Advanced Sports Media Production (MDC 411) are the two required courses. Two additional courses must be chosen from the following list of courses:

  • Elective Courses (Choose two, 6 credits total):

    • MDC 320: Communication on Television and Radio
    • MDC 375: Communication Through Risk & Crisis
