“Voices for Clean Energy” Tour Highlights WCU’s Geoexchange System

Calli Lambard (foreground), administrative assistant for WCU’s Office of Sustainability (OoS), took those who attended the PennEnvironment “Voices for Clean Energy” tour on April 3 to the University’s geoexchange pump house next to the OoS on West Rosedale Avenue. Among those who spoke at the event was PA State Representative Chris Pielli (blue blazer, khakis), who is serving as the University’s Legislative Fellow.
The program began at Church Farm School in Exton with a look at and discussion of the school’s solar energy array. It concluded at WCU with information about the geothermal system that heats and cools 1.7 million square feet — more than 40% — of the campus’ building space.
Brad Flamm, director of the University’s Office of Sustainability, said his office welcomed “working with PennEnvironment on this event, as it gives us an opportunity to highlight WCU’s leadership in geo-exchange heating and cooling.
“We have one of the largest such systems on a North American college or university campus,” he noted. “Letting our communities in the borough and Chester County, and in professional organizations know via the Voices for Clean Energy program is a welcome opportunity.”
“This commitment to geoexchange technology is one example of the University’s efforts to become a more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable institution of higher ed,” said Andy Lehman, Vice President of University Affairs and Chief of Staff.
The University’s investments in geoexchange heating and cooling technology have been realized through close collaborations between WCU’s Facilities Division, the Administration and Finance Division, Academic Affairs, the Sustainability Council, the Council of Trustees, PASSHE, and other colleagues.
PennEnvironment works for clean air, clean water, clean energy, wildlife and open spaces, and a livable climate. Their members across the state put grassroots support behind the organization’s research and advocacy. The PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center staff works to investigate problems, craft solutions, and educate the public and decision-makers in pursuit of a greener future.
