Essentials of Trauma-informed Care:
Creating, Destroying, and Restoring Sanctuary
Dr. Sandra Bloom, M.D.
Sandra L. Bloom, M.D. is a Board-Certified psychiatrist, Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy and Co-Director of the Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice at the School of Public Health of Drexel University in Philadelphia. Dr. Bloom is the co-founder of the Sanctuary Institute, Distinguished Fellow at the Andrus Children’s Center and a Past-President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. In 1997, Dr. Bloom wrote Creating Sanctuary: Toward the Evolution of Sane Societies and co-authored Bearing Witness: Violence and Collective Responsibility in 1998. She co-authored Destroying Sanctuary: The Crisis in Human Service Delivery which was published in 2010 by Oxford University Press. The third part of this trilogy, Restoring Sanctuary: A New Operating System for Trauma-Informed Systems of Care was published in 2013 by Oxford University Press. Routledge simultaneously released a new edition of Creating Sanctuary: Toward the Evolution of Sane Societies.
