PRE-GENETIC COUNSELING

Genetic counseling is a field which supports patients as well as health professionals in order to assess risk for particular diseases and disorders utilizing genetic information. Academic Expectation

Specific admission requirements vary per program. You should consult with schools of interest to determine their specific admission requirements. 

Suggested academic preparation:

  • Bachelor's degree- A bachelor's degree plus prerequisite courses in the sciences are the required for most schools.
  • Competitive academic record- Heavy course loads (15 credit hours by junior year) and multiple science courses with labs in the same semester.
  • Major in anything

Entrance Exams

GRE (Graduate Record Exam) Information:

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for most programs. There are options to complete this exam at-home or at a testing center. Typically, a fee of $220 is required to complete the exam. Earlier preparation for this exam can help boost confidence in skills relative to the test. 

Application Information

Registration for programs through National Matching Services (NMS) typically begins in July, and applications are typically open in September of the academic year preceding the anticipated date of enrollment. Deadlines for applications also vary based on the program. Professional Degrees

Master of Genetic Counseling

In general, there is a requirement of two years beyond academic education at the undergraduate level in order to complete a M.S. in Genetic Counseling. However, some programs can be 21 months long. Throughout the professional curriculum, students will be required to adhere to coursework, clinical experience, and research experience typically towards a thesis. After graduation, it is important for students to obtain certification and licensure.
