Science of Learning

Students have a lot of material to learn during their school careers, and many tests to take. Often, students study for exams by re-reading notes, memorizing or cramming. While these are quick and easy ways to revisit materials, they are not the most effective or efficient way for students to learn information for long-term recollection. In the Science of Learning Workshops series, students will be introduced to the science behind human memory and how memories are stored and retrieved. With this foundation, students will learn about research-based study techniques. Our goal is to save students time and perform better on exams by helping them study more efficiently and in a way that mirrors how the human brain encodes memories for long term retrieval.

The Science of Learning Workshops can either be 1 or 3 days. In the one-day workshop, students will get a taste of how human memory works and be introduced to 2-3 research-based study practices. In the 3-day workshop, we will visit the same students every 3-4 weeks throughout the semester, which will allow us to see how the students have been incorporating new study strategies into their routines and help them to implement them effectively.
