Accomplishments Since 2009 Campus Climate Survey

  • In recognition and acknowledgement of the WCU Faculty and Staff they are now featured on the website and in WCU publications.
  • New staff are introduced at the President's Fall Annual Address.
  • President's Commission on Status of Women was revitalized and the Commission presented additional recommendations to the President. The following recommendations were completed:
    • making the Women's Center Director position a full-time 12 month position
    • providing lactation stations
    • hiring an advocate for victims of sexual misconduct
    • and increasing training across the campus on sexual violence.
  • A survey was distributed by the ADA Committee in the Spring of 2012 to all members of the campus community to identify accessibility issues on campus. As a result of this survey, the ADA Coordinator (Social Equity Director) now works with Facilities on addressing and rectifying accessibility issues.
  • A Sexual Misconduct Policy was created in Fall 2012 and disseminated to the campus community. Additionally, an on-line reporting mechanism was developed, and a Sexual Misconduct Response Team was formed to promptly and equitably respond to reports of sexual misconduct.
  • Incoming students complete two online modules that address alcohol and drug use and sexual violence awareness and prevention, including consent, bystander intervention, and primary prevention. All first year students attend an improved sexual violence prevention program to reinforce the information from the online module. Prevention programming is offered throughout the year by the Women's Center, Wellness Promotion and Social Equity.
  • The role of Sexual Misconduct Advocate was added to the Director of Wellness Promotion position 2014. A Coordinator for Healthy Masculinity and Violence Prevention position was hired in 2015. The Counseling, Health Center, Women's Center Staff, and the Sexual Misconduct Advocate are all confidential campus resources.
  • The University Forum RFP process was modified as a means to provide programming, trainings and/or events to address Campus Climate issues (i.e., Understanding Privilege, Athletes Against Sexual Violence, Latino Social Conference, to name a few).
  • Race relations "speak out" student panel presentations were established by the Office of Multicultural Affairs to speak to classes, student organizations and other campus units.
  • Programming on LGBTQA issues was increased for residence hall students and efforts were made to increase the number of students and employees to participate in LGBTQA 101 Ally Training. Training was also expanded for Resident and Desk Assistants.
  • Facilities and IT continue work towards incorporating concepts of "Universal Design" into facilities construction, campus electronic resources and computing applications.
  • An increase in the number and availability of diversity workshops, dialogues; programs on cultural competence, mental health awareness, and programs addressing exclusion/inclusion issues.
